Pilots Come up Short Against Montana

This past Saturday the Pilots lacrosse team took to the field against MCLA Division 1 foe, the University of Montana Grizzlies.  On a day when the rain was relentless, so were the Grizzlies.  Montana spent the afternoon scoring in bunches, leaving the Pilots wondering how to make the necessary improvements moving forward.

The Pilots scored first giving the team an initial spark of energy, and even though Montana scored a handful of their own, the 1st quarter ended with the Pilots trailing 6-4.  Montana came out firing on all cylinders in the second quarter dropping eight goals, converting on the majority of their chances.  The Grizzlies had an answer (or two) every time the Pilots would strike.  The first half ended with a score of 14-8 leaving the Pilots scratching their heads about how to get back in the game.

The second half was a totally different story; Portland sparked a nice run slimming the margin to 4 goals with a mid third quarter score of 15-11.  With a renewed energy the Pilots did all they could to rally and protect their home field.  Unfortunately, Montana kept pace and ended the game victorious with a final score of 19-13.

Junior midfielder Chris Timm finished the game with 4 goals and 1 assist, while freshman Midfielder Collin Lashway had a solid college debut ending the day with 3 goals and 1 assist.  Freshman goalie Evans Lineweaver finished with 8 saves in the contest.

The Pilots will host out of conference foe Humboldt State University on Sunday February 23rd on the University of Portland campus at 1PM.
